The Filename or Extension Is Too Long error is reported by Windows when a user tries to rename or save a file with either a filename or extension beyond the maximum allowed by the Windows operating system. A filename is the set of characters, usually alphanumeric but sometimes also includes a dash or underscore, that is used to identify a particular program, document or other form of computer data. An extension is most often a shorter string of characters that starts with a period and usually ends with up to 4 characters. For example, .jpg is the extension for a certain type of image format, .htm is an extension for an HTML file, and .doc is the extension for the Microsoft Word format. This error is also triggered sometimes when a user tries to update or save a registry key using the reg.exe program. The maximum character length of a valid Windows file is 255 characters. The most common solution to this issue is to simply save the file with less characters. There are cases when this message actually refers to a folder as opposed to a file. The same rules basically apply.
