The most prevalent threat to the Internet in 2006 and now in 2007 is spyware and adware, but the history of spyware dates back to the late 1990s. The main forces behind these Internet practices now-a-days are companies backed by millions of dollars. The malicious files they release are considered by some to be viruses, however, people should be well aware of the typical differences. In most cases, spyware and adware results in a monetary gain for the villain (yes, I'll call them villains) at the expense of the average Internet user. Viruses were typically released by hackers, almost as a game, to see if they can out-do each other or achieve their own malicious goal. In many cases these were, and still are, made by young adults or teenagers. Today, the most annoying and hard-to-remove adware applications are released by companies that are making millions of dollars a month.
These malicious files typically enter someone's computer by being bundled with free applications that you download. Unless you read the fine print, you may not even know they are being installed. Once installed, many of these programs monitor what you are doing, the keywords you are searching google with, etc., so that they can send you targetted pop-up advertising, redirect your browser, or send you spam. Firstly, they infect millions and millions of computers. So based purely on math, it is obvious that some percentage will purchase something after clicking their ads. For example, if 10 million computers were infected and just 1% ended up purchasing something, that is still 100,000 sales. In many cases, users don't even realize they're infected.
