How To Fix EXE Errors

If your PC is generating numerous EXE errors, you may either have corrupted or missing files, invalid registry entries or a nasty virus or spyware infection. Let's take a look at how to troubleshoot these EXE errors and get your PC running smoothly once again.

  1. First, let's rid the system of temporary folders. Go to the C:\Windows\temp folder and the C:\temp folders and delete all contents.
  2. Search for *.tmp and delete all *.tmp files found.
  3. Next, look under each user in the Documents and Settings folder and delete the contents of the following folders but not the actual folders:

    • Local Settings\Temp
    • Cookies
    • History
    • Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

  4. Note: you may not have all of the folders mentioned depending on your version of Windows

  5. Go to the Start button, choose Run, and type in: cleanmgr. Click OK.
  6. Select the drive where the operating system is residing, usually the C: drive, and checkmark the boxes for Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin, Temporary Files, Temporary Offline Files and Offline Files. Click OK. Click Yes to confirm that you really want to delete these files. It may take a few minutes for the process to run.
  7. If you can't delete some of these files in normal mode, try rebooting in Safe mode and cleaning them out that way.
Now that your system is cleared of some of the junk, let's try an automatic system repair. Windows XP and Windows 2000 users can take advantage of a built-in utility for repairing Windows system files, the System File Checker. Use this tool to check for corrupted system files. It will scan your system and verify the integrity of system files. If it finds missing or corrupted files, the System File Checker will automatically replace them with good versions.
  1. Go to the Start button
  2. Click on Run
  3. Type in: sfc /scannow
Cleaning the system registry can also help with EXE errors but this is not a task for mere mortals. Instead, choose a software utility such as RegCure to scan and clean the system registry automatically. This nifty tool will clear up literally thousands of error causing problems and your PC will regain lost performance as a result.

Another important task when dealing with EXE errors is to scan your system for spyware that might be causing the errors. There are several reputable anti-spyware programs available on the internet that will do the trick such as the trial version of Lavasoft's Ad-Aware or the free online scan from Trend Micro. While these free tools are handy for troubleshooting one time problems, we recommend that you invest in a complete anti-spyware solution that will not only take care of your immediate problem but prevent future infections as well. See our list of highly rated anti-spyware recommendations.

If you are experiencing EXE errors related to specific programs, try reinstalling the program that is giving you trouble. Some programs, such as those in the Microsoft Office suite like MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint, come with a built-in repair feature that will search for and repair any program related errors. For example, if a Microsoft Word program file becomes corrupt, running the "Detect and Repair" tool found under the Help menu will search for damaged files and automatically replace them with clean copies from the installation disc.

EXE problems can be a thing of the past with the right tools and regular system maintenance. If you want an automated tool for fixing errors, give RegCure a try. It will quickly scan and remove a wide variety of system problems.
