When you use Microsoft Outlook for your email program and find yourself with missing or corrupted emails, there's no need for alarm, it is possible to recover your email. We'll first look at repairing Microsoft Outlook itself and if that doesn't work, we'll take a look at an email data recovery tool. First, you might try the built-in repair tool that comes with Microsoft Outlook. This tool is designed to repair program files in the Microsoft Office suite of products. While this procedure is a program fix, not a file fix, running it may solve the underlying problem of what is causing your files to become corrupted in the first place. To access the Detect and Repair tool, first open Microsoft Outlook. If your Outlook program is damaged to the point where it won't open, open any other of the Microsoft Office products such as Microsoft Word or Excel. Next, go to the help Menu of any of these Office applications and choose Detect and Repair from the list. This process will scan your Microsoft Office programs for errors and missing or corrupt MS Office files. When it finds a problem with a file or sees that a file is missing, the utility will automatically replace it with a clean copy. You may need your original Microsoft Office installation discs for this to occur. Likewise, after the repair, you may need to re-key the CD-key to reactivate the program. Be sure to have your installation discs and the CD-key handy. When using Detect and Repair, you can opt to have all of your shortcuts saved by placing a check mark in the box labeled "restore my shortcuts while repairing". If you don't check this box, all of your shortcuts and other customizations will be discarded including the character you've chosen as your Office Assistant, custom toolbars, most recently opened files, and more. When you click Start, the Windows installer will load and begin the process. After using Detect and Repair, go back into Microsoft Outlook and see if that solved your problem. If not, you may need a data recovery tool made especially for the recovery of Outlook files. Microsoft Outlook uses a system of files that is quite complex. PST files contain email messages, contacts, folders and notes. Like any computer file, PST files can become corrupt or could even be accidentally deleted.
